Mustard Seeds & Mountains provides home repair for those living in the eastern part of McDowell County, West Virginia. We generally work in the area from Maybeury to Superior. Most of our home repair takes place in the summer from June through August but we also have certain dates available in the Spring and Fall months.
Our home repair is intended to make homes more warm, safe or dry for families who are low income, elderly or disabled. We also do interior and exterior painting. We do not do remodeling, electrical work, or 2nd story roofs.
The homeowner's family must assist us in doing the work and we ask for a payment of 10% of the total cost of repairs to Mustard Seeds as a donation to help fund repairs. Under special circumstances, we will sometimes give a waiver for the physical assistance or for the payment. Homeowners must also participate in lunchtime devotions with the teams working on their home.
The home repair is done mostly by volunteer teams and families (nonprofessionals) who come from all over the U.S. who want to make a difference. These volunteers also fund the projects. We receive no government funding.
Homeowners can apply for home repair by calling (304) 862-4643 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am during the months of February through May.
Mustard Seeds' acceptance of applications is not a promise to repair houses. We reserve the right to use our discretion when choosing applicants, but we do try to do the worst cases first. Since we use volunteers to do the labor, we also must match the skills of the volunteers with the work that needs to be done. This may mean that we will not get to a house because we do not have skills on the team to do the work. We do not carry over lists of applicants from year to year. Before doing work on a home, we do an assessment and then write a contract with the homeowner so that both parties know what is expected.
